Frequently Asked Questions
QUESTION:
Where can I go to see what shelter animals are available?
ANSWER:
The best way to view the animals available is to come to the shelter. New animals come in every day, and animals that may be here one day be adopted the next. If you would like to see some of the animals available on line, visit www.petfinder.com/shelters/GA460.html

QUESTION:
What do I do if my companion animal is lost or missing?
ANSWER:
If you have lost your companion animal, please come to the shelter to verify if we have your lost animal. By law, we are required to keep an animal for 72 hours before it is evaluated for rescue or adoption. For this reason we recommend that you come to the shelter on a regular basis to search for your lost companion animal, either daily or every other day. During the year 2008, there were over 6,000 animals turned into the shelter. This averages about 500 animals per month or 115 per week. Due to the large numbers of animals we deal with and the large numbers of calls we receive concerning lost animals per day, we are unable to search the shelter for your lost animal. Here are some other suggestions for locating your pet - good luck and please have your companion animal spayed or neutered...

Animals that are spayed or neutered are less likely to roam

QUESTION:
What is the difference between the Cherokee County Humane Society (CCHS) and the Cherokee County Animal Shelter (CCAS)?
ANSWER:
The Cherokee County Animal Shelter and the Cherokee County Humane Society are two entirely seperate organizations. The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is a part of the Cherokee County Government, whereas the Cherokee County Humane Society is not. The Humane Society is a group of compassionate people dedicated to animal welfare. CCHS does not have a holding facility for animals, but they do sponsor a low cost spay/neuter program for low income families who qualify. You may contact them at (770)-928-5115. You may have to leave a message, but they are very responsible about returning their calls.

QUESTION:
What is the policy on adoption?
ANSWER:
We are an open adoption facility. Our knowlegable staff will try to help match you to the best possible animal for your lifestyle and let you know any information we have on the animal of your choice. Some animals may have special requirements such as fenced yards for the "bully" breeds and extra large dogs, some may require "no small children" or there could be some special heath needs with others. We want you to walk through and find an animal you like and spend some time with them so that you get to know their personality. If you have any other dogs at home, we ask that you bring them back to meet the dog of your choice so that we know they will get along; if you have children, please bring them so that we know everything will be ok once they leave the shelter. Don't be hesitant to ask questions. The fees are $100.00 for any animal available for adoption, which includes the spay or neuter, microchip and the first round of routine vaccinations (1st set minimum for puppies/kittens) Heartworm test for adult dogs, Leukemia/Aids test for adult cats, Leukemia for kittens and some additional services. Please note that if the animal you adopt requires additional shots, you will be responsible for them. You will be asked several questions, please keep in mind that it is in the best interest of you and your companion animal that you answer honestly. We do reserve the right to refuse an adoption to anyone we feel is not a good match.

QUESTION:
What is rescue and foster?
ANSWER:
Rescue is individual or organization who has gone through the steps asked by the State Department of Agriculture, to be certified and licensed to take the care and responsibility from a shelter to ensure care for an animal.
Foster is a person who has been approved by the same guidelines to care for an animal until time comes where they maybe well enough for adoption. An example would be when kittens that are too young to be weaned come into the shelter. We might call upon foster to care for them until they are old enough to receive vaccinations. All foster animals are ultimately returned to the shelter for adoption.

QUESTION:
Do you come out and pick up animals or do patrols and how do I report cruelty? Can you come and pick up 3 stray cats that are living in my garage.
ANSWER:
We are not equipped to come out and pick up animals, you will need to contact Animal Control for enforcement issues, bites, or other animal control issues. Animals impounded by Animal Control will come to the shelter, but Animal Control is another branch of the Cherokee County Government 678-493-6200. Both Animal Control and the shelter only take animals from Cherokee County residents and proof of residency is required upon surrendering an animal to the shelter. Remember that stray and surplus animals are most often a result of human carelessness and are not the fault of the stray animals themselves—please ask everyone to spay or neuter their companion animals.

Please call Animal Control or the Shelter if you suspect animal cruelty or neglect. And of course, any time a situation is life threatening or dangerous to a person or companion animal please call 911.

QUESTION:
How long are the dogs and cats up for adoption before they have to be euthanized?
ANSWER:
We are fortunate to have a wonderful team who strive daily, beyond the call of duty, to encourage adoption and rescue. When an animal is put up for adoption they will not be pulled from the adoption area unless they become aggressive or seriously ill. Our adoption rate is well over the national average and is one of the best in the state but we depend on the citizens of Cherokee County to be responsible and have their companion animals spayed or neutered.

QUESTION:
What kind of items does the shelter need donated?
ANSWER:
The Cherokee County Animal Shelter’s wish list for donated supplies and tools is extensive. If you would like to donate any of these items, bring the donations to the shelter. Financial donations (cash, check or credit card) are also accepted and are needed for special projects.  We also have a wish list available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/39L12QJXJ88KD/ref=cm_wl_rlist_go_v_C-2_d
